Orchestra Leader | Making Music

Orchestra Leader

Vacancy Type:
Application deadline:
Saturday, 31 May 2025
Description of vacancy:

Portsmouth Philharmonic Orchestra is an amateur orchestra based in Portsmouth. The orchestra rehearses from September to July each year, normally giving three concerts in each season. Our current leader is retiring early in 2026, so in preparation for this we are looking to appoint an experienced violinist/leader to give inspiration and confidence to our well-established string section, enhancing our tradition of friendliness and the enjoyment of making music together.

The orchestra was founded by a small group of amateur musicians in 2009. Our aims are to promote musical activities in the Portsmouth area and to regularly perform concerts to raise money for charitable causes. We currently have approximately 35 amateur members who rehearse weekly, and we have guest players we call upon to join us for concerts.

The distinctive character of the orchestra is its friendliness and openness to all who are enthusiastic about playing music.  We meet for rehearsals on Sunday evenings from 7-9pm in term time and perform three concerts a year in the local area, with the net profits from these going to charities. Now in our 17th season, more than £24,000 has been raised for a variety of local good causes.
